MOSES TO LEAD PLAGAL
On July 9, 1998, the Board of Directors of the Pro-Life Alliance of Gays and Lesbians unanimously elected Moses Remedios to be PLAGAL's fourth President. Moses has been involved in the pro-life movement since 1989. He founded a pro-life student group at Glendale Community College in Glendale, California, slightly before the Webster decision, to counter pro-abortion activities on campus. In 1990, with the help of the Right to Life League of Southern California, he was one of the founding members of California Collegians for Life and served as the group's President until 1991. Moses has served in several capacities with American Collegians for Life, beginning with Vice-President of Development in 1992 and going on to become the group's National President in 1993. In the summer of 1993, Moses interned with the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund. After completing the internship, he joined the staff of the National Right to Life Committee's State legislative Department and went on to become the Assistant to the Director in the newly formed Department of Medical Ethics. In the Fall of 1994, Moses left NRLC to attend the University of Southern California.
In 1997, Moses graduated from the USC School of Medicine, Primary Care Physician Assistant Program and is currently a Physician Assistant in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center. Moses had delayed deciding to accept the position as PLAGAL's President until after he finished his participation in the California AIDS RIDE 5 which started in San Francisco and ended in Los Angeles earlier in June. Remedios succeeds Philip Arcidi, who served as PLAGAL's third President between 1994 and 1998.
PRIDE AT DC
Pride at Washington, DC has become routine for PLAGALites in the DC area. On Sunday, June 7, 1998, we opened our table at ten o'clock in the morning, distributed literature, collected fourteen names for the mailing list, and talked, debated, and generally enjoyed the mild if not chilly day. Many thanks to Chris Hinckle, Steve Satran, Joe Beard, Tom Sena, and Patrick Rothwell.
PLAGAL's 2ND YEAR
AT LA PRIDE
Over the weekend of June 27 and 28, 1998, Southern Californians witnessed a new tradition. (They say a tradition is something that you have done twice.) Southern California PLAGAL participated for the second year at LA Pride over that weekend. The weekend was warm, clear, and wonderful. PLAGAL's table was placed in a much more visible spot than last year. We were in a set of booths right next to the Main entrance to the event just three booths up from the ACLU and right next to the Roman Catholic "Dignity Los Angeles". As our usual custom, we had a table with PLAGAL banner, PLAGAL information, "Abortion = Death" bumper stickers, buttons and generic pro-life literature. Staffing the booth were PLAGALites Moses Remedios and Mark Helmuth, and Rik Pedersen who provided much needed breaks for Moses and Mark (Thanks Rik!).
Saturday, the day before Pride parade, was fairly uneventful, we sat at our booth greeting several new friends and PLAGALites who stopped by to say "Hi." Mark -- who is deaf -- established our booth as the unofficial "Deaf Meeting Place" of the Pride event.
Sunday was the big day when several thousands of people poured into the festival grounds after the Pride parade. A group of four lesbians stopped by our booth and asked if we would mind watching their bags for them while they participated in the various festivities. "Of course not, we'd be happy to watch your bags." was our reply. One of the lesbians identified her friend who was leaving her bag as Ms. LA Gay Pride (yes, she was a real woman! More on this later.).
Visiting our booth again this year was Marcos Gonzales, a board member of Long Beach Pride and fellow PLAGALite. He's a pro-life Democrat, a leader in the gay and lesbian community, and we're proud to have him amongst our membership.
About an hour later, a group of two women and two men approached our booth with a not-so-friendly-personae. One of the women identified herself as one of the "original" ACT-UP members and demanded to know why we were at Pride. "Tolerance, freedom to express our views in an open forum, democracy, diversity... pick one!" was our reply. "No!" she retorted. "What are two white men doing here? You have penises!" "Wait a minute!" Moses snapped back, "Who you calling white? Yo soy Cubano so respetame!" She picked-up an "Abortion = Death" button and said, "This is obscene, you've taken our symbol and slogan!" (Yes. Abortion is obscene!) She demanded to know who was funding us. The Moral Majority -- Not!!! She continued verbally assaulting us, when another lesbian approached the booth interrupted the "original ACT-UPer" and said, "Excuse me, but as a woman I have to tell you that they (referring to PLAGAL) have the right to express their views regardless of their gender!" Next thing, these women were engaged in a heated debate right in front of our booth. But thanks to our unknown friend the protesters left.
A while later, Ms. LA Gay Pride (remember, she's a real woman) stopped by the booth to get something from her bag and much to our surprise, she had an "Abortion = Death" bumper sticker emblazoned on her over-alls. Now how about that!?!
By the conclusion of LA Pride weekend, we had collected 56 new names and at least 25 of those names were of women.
PRIDE AT CLEVELAND
Into every life a little rain must fall, and rain it did on Cleveland's Pride. At first Cleveland thought that Pride was going to be cancelled because of the foul weather. Cleveland PLAGAL did not even set up the booth until around 1:00. Dan had provided us with a wonderful lunch which we enjoyed very much. We did have two episodes where there were people that were not happy with our presence but otherwise everything went well. We had collected seven names but the weather went bad and we had to tear down the booth very early because pride had to be cancelled
LOG CABIN ASKED TO AFFIRM NEUTRALITY ON ABORTION
PLAGALites who are members of the Log Cabin organization of lesbian and gay Republicans have asked the 1998 National Log Cabin Convention to reaffirm its neutrality on the abortion issue by rescinding its 1997 call for the removal of anti-abortion language from the Republican Party's national platform. The Republican PLAGALites seek to present their position at the Log Cabin National Convention over the weekend of August 14-16, 1998, at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas. The proposal states:
WHEREAS, Resolution No. 1 adopted by the 1997 Log Cabin National Convention calls for the elimination of the pro-life language from the Platform of the 2000 Republican National Convention that had been a prominent part of previous Platforms; and
WHEREAS, the language sought to be eliminated includes that supporting the federal prohibition of partial birth abortion and the federal allowance of parental consent and notification, patients' right to know, feticide, and similar legislation, as well as the support for the sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception; and
WHEREAS, there is little division among Republicans of any sexual orientation over the propriety, if not necessity, of federal prohibition of partial birth abortions and the federal allowance of parental consent and notification, patient right to know, feticide, and similar state legislation; and
WHEREAS, the support for the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception, while not unanimously approved by all Republicans, has been a prominent part of the Platforms of the Republican National Conventions since 1980, conventions that victoriously nominated President Ronald Reagan and his successor; and
WHEREAS, 1997 Resolution No. 1 effectively allies and ensnares this organization as a constituent part of the pro-choice efforts within the Republican Party, a position inconsistent with the professed intent of the authors of that resolution:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the 1998 Log Cabin National Convention:
1. That Resolution No. 1, adopted by the 1997 Log Cabin National Convention is hereby repealed;
2. That this Convention and the Log Cabin National Office, its name, personnel, and resources, are and shall remain silent and entirely neutral with respect to:
A. The position of the 2000 Republican National Convention on abortion, partial birth abortions, parental consent and notification, patient right to know, and other life issues; and
B. Any legislation before the Congress or the legislatures of the several states respecting abortion, partial birth abortions, parental consent and notification, patient right to know, and other life issues; and
3. That nothing in this resolution shall affect the authority and power of individual members of Log Cabin, local clubs, or state federations, to adopt and express their own position with respect to these issues and concerns.
DID PLAGAL GET INK?
When anything appears in the lesbian and gay media discussing the Pro-Life movement, or in any media discussing PLAGAL, Please, PLEASE send it to us. We do not have -- and cannot afford -- a clipping service or subscriptions to the multitude of lesbian and gay media. We are always discovering -- sometimes months after the event -- that we were mentioned somewhere. As has become our custom, we would also like to remind our readers that PLAGAL needs the names (and addresses, voice and fax numbers, and now e-mail addresses) of local gay and lesbian media.
We have learned that on January 23, 1998, Carol Crossed, of the Seamless Garment Network, spoke to the City Club of Cleveland, Ohio, and discussed, in part, the role of PLAGAL in the pro-life movement.
Tom Sena's column appeared in the 26 November-2 December 1997 issue of focusPoint, out of Minneapolis, and the 8 January 1998 issue of San Francisco's Bay Area Reporter.
Steve Cook, PLAGAL's Vice-President in the South Bay Area, has been attending meetings of the San Jose' Lesbian and Gay Center as the representative of PLAGAL. They seem confounded by the presence of a pro-life homosexual.
